Kam is all up in Mozam....

Hi Everyone,

This is just a very quick blog to say that I have arrived in one piece and am having a really brilliant time. This is the first time Ive been able to get on the internet and so I thought Id just give you a quick heads up.....

Friday
Arrived in Mozambique. The flight was good and didnt feel as long as I thought it would be. In typically African style the person from the volunteer centre who was coming to pick me up was an hour late....hmmm! I was relaxed but tired and just waited and waited and waited.....I arrived at the hostel (never thought I would ever stay in a hostel...lol). Its really nice....I'll be here till this afternoon. My host Mum is coming to collect me. On first impressions it reminds me of the Gambia or Jamaica so that was cool. Im trying to remember what else I did. Oh, Friday I dumped my stuff in my room which Im sharing with 3 other volunteers. Two fom Germany and one from Iceland. All are really nice and we've all been 'bonding'....lol! The food has been amazing.....although Im sure I will be sick of rice by the time this adventure is all over. I feel in the shower....I was trying to balance everything as I didnt want anything to touch the floor.....I put my hand out to catch the wall and there was a broken tile and my hand was gushing......the first aid kit was brilliant and the girl from Iceland just through loads of antiseptic wash all over it. It healed now so it all good. I slept like a baby.....snored and was told to shut it by the girl above me....lol. She apologised in the morning....lol

Saturday - Training Day One
I woke up and had a typical Mozambique breakfast.....Bread with Butter! Im not loving that every morning but Im so hungry when I wake up. We had a morning on cultural awarness training which I think I feel asleep in. The thing is....its hot. We're inside and I just couldnt take the heat! We were supposed to have a 10min break during the session but me and the other volunteers ended up falling asleep for 1 1/2 hours......lol. I went for a little walk in town and ended up stopping off at a bar for a cans of Mozambiques finest beer....lol. I know....never really touched the stuff before but I think I might really like it. The rest of the day seemed to float by....I was to tired to go out partying. One of my room mates did and didnt get in till 4am....he had just 3hrs sleep and then it was on to session two.
Oh, I didnt bring a mozzie net because i thought I was going straight to my host family but I did bring a sleeping bag liner.....I have been sweating like a b*#!h at night as Im wearing long sleeved everything. Primark specials.... Its working as Ive yet to have been bitten but the HEAT......heesssshh! Its like 25 at night or something.....eeeeekkkkk!

Sunday - Training Day 2
We had a talk on sterotypes - long session. Interesting though. I enjoyed it. Again another hot day.....again another day of falling asleep in the session. I went to have a little nap at about 1 before lunch......did anyone wake me up for lunch.....eerrrr no! I was woken at 3 to say we were going out....I was starving. I went to check for food and Im telling you there was nothing but sauce at the bottom of a pot of beans and 6 grains of rice....I was not impressed at all! Anyway we had a really great afternoon/ evening. We went to this girls house called Sandra....she loves Usher and so wants everyone to call her Sursher..... She cooked dinner for us volunteers and some of her friends. There was about 10 of us all togther. We get to her apartment and its on the 11th floor of this block and there is no lift.....we walked!!! Its was painful. It was worth it though as her cooking was amazing. We had an in door BBQ which Im sure in the UK would have breached every health and safty rule in the book.....there was no gas so thats what we had to do cook on the BBQ inside. I loved it. I took pictures but I cant upload right now. Then we drank Martini with no ice.....and danced in the front room till 12 with more beer.....it was brilliant. She has an amazing view of the city from the balcony and I just felt so relaxed and happy!!! We went back to the hostel and had more beer on the balcony....till the small hours....

Right, the spelling probably shocking...Im sorry. Im logging off now. Moving in with the host family today. Im really excited. I need to pack my bag and tidy up.....I few people are still asleep. I dont know when I'll be able to blog next but I hope you've enjoyed this little snippet.

I'll try to put pictures up next time.

The language is brilliant by the way. Apparently I will be fluent in 5 months time......Im very excited.

Bom dia, Ate logo (Morning, see you later)

Glad to hear that you're having a good time Kam! I'd be lying if I said I’m not feeling a teeny bit jealous after your first post!

If you're fluent in only 5 months time I’ll be well impressed. Não traga vergonha para o nosso nome de família!

Keep blogging! I check for new posts all the time!
